Payment Failure Codes

Last updated: September 1, 2026

Payment failures can be caused by a payor account, payee account, payment method, or payment-network issue. Open the failed payment in Loop to see the specific reason. Resolve the underlying issue, then retry the payment when the option is available. If the payment status is unknown or funds may have moved, contact Loop immediately.

How to retry a failed payment

  1. Go to Payables → Payments and open the Failed tab.

  2. Open the payment and review the failure reason and description.

  3. Resolve the underlying account or payment-method issue.

  4. Select Retry payment, then choose Schedule or Schedule right now.

  5. Confirm the new payment schedule.

Important notes

  • The same return code can require different action depending on whether the issue is with the payor or the payee.

  • Payment timing and available payment methods depend on the account, provider, schedule, and processing calendar.

  • If the payment status is UNKNOWN, or the payment has already been initiated, contact Loop immediately.

  • Historical provider-specific scenarios may not apply to every Loop account.

R20: Non-Transaction Account

Remove the bank account from the carrier on the "Payment settings page. Then, update the organization's bank details by asking the carrier to provide their bank details.

R85: Transfer type is not supported or forbidden

This often indicates the payee's bank account is not a US bank account. Reach out to Loop to confirm before coordinating with the payee to be paid through a US bank account or offline outside of Loop.

DS24: There was an unexpected error with this transfer request

This can usually be resolved by retrying the payment. If payments to a specific bank account often fail with this code, Loop can update the payment method to avoid future failures.

R23: Credit entry refused by the receiver

Ensure the payee did not initiate a return. If they did not, they will likely need to whitelist Loop's originator IDs to receive payment.

AG01: Transfer type is not supported or forbidden

Typically, this indicates a non-ACH transfer was attempted and failed because the payee’s account does not support non-ACH transfers. Update the payee’s payment method to ACH before retrying the payment.

E997: RTP network timeout

You can either retry the payment immediately to reattempt using the RTP network or, for an additional guarantee, you can switch the payee's payment method to ACH to avoid RTP usage.

AB05: RTP credit timeout

You can either retry the payment immediately to reattempt using the RTP network or, for an additional guarantee, you can switch the payee's payment method to ACH to avoid RTP usage.

AB08: RTP credit timeout

You can either retry the payment immediately to reattempt using the RTP network or, for an additional guarantee, you can switch the payee's payment method to ACH to avoid RTP usage.

E981: FedNow invalid sender receiver profile

Update the payee's payment method to ACH to avoid using RTP. We do not expect this to succeed after a retry.
